When it comes to educational computer software, one of the most important categories of applications is the software tools. This general category includes specific software solutions that provide essential instructional tools, interactive communication tools, and research and reference tools. Many average computer users are unaware that they use many of these tools everyday even outside of the educational setting.
Probably the largest and most diverse category is the software packages that enable students to learn a particular discipline or gain a specific skill or set of skills.
